What to expect

The first consultation will last for up to an hour during this time the osteopath will take a full case history for the reason the patient is seeing the osteopath and their medical history. This will the osteopath with the information required in order to decide what areas should be examined and which tests orthopaedic and medical tests such as neurological tests should be conducted. During the examination and treatment the patient is usually requested to undress down to their underwear so that local symptomatic and distant related areas can be assessed and treated. After examination the osteopath will discuss with the patient their symptoms, the treatment and management plan. Evaluation and treatment is manually performed and includes palpation and the use of techniques such as soft tissue massage, stretching of muscles, articulation and mobilisation of joints. After treatment the patient is provided with advice such as exercise and management.
